Present in the last few hours for the show La Poche Bleue, the excellent Guillaume Latendresse discussed the issue of goaltenders for the Montreal Canadiens.

He strongly believes that Kent Hughes needs to seriously address the goaltender situation in the offseason, notably by granting a contract extension to Samuel Montembeault.

And we completely agree with him.

Let's be clear, Samuel has truly earned it and he openly states, to anyone willing to listen, that this is what he expects.

He wants to stay with the Montreal Canadiens in the long term.

Latendresse even makes a specific proposal:

From my side, I would go with a four-year contract with a salary between 2.5 and 3 million per year. Maybe we'll get to two years from now and say we overpaid? But he won't hurt you on the salary cap. The worst-case scenario is that he's your backup at 2.5 or 3 million. If you give him the chance to start the season, you might end up paying 4 million.

- Guillaume Latendresse

A four-season contract, worth 2.75 million per season and 11 million dollars in total, would you do it?

Do you like the idea? It would be a big contract for Sam and it would be a good compromise for Kent Hughes given the circumstances.

The 26-year-old goaltender has one more season on his contract, which is valued at $1 million. He will be able to sign a contract extension from July 1st next year.
