Cole Caufield's agent breaks the silence and confirms another big rumor
CH fans started their week off on a good note when they learned this Monday morning about the long-term signing of one of their favorites, Cole Caufield. The young American will therefore be a CH for the next 8 years.
The experienced agent of CH's young sensation, Pat Brisson, was kind enough to break the silence and react to this signing. He answered questions from the Journal de Montréal in a phone interview with the Journal before getting on a plane for a flight between Las Vegas and Buffalo.
We are very happy. For the Canadiens and Cole, it's a good match. The team is heading in the right direction. They want to get out of their rebuilding phase and they're looking at their pieces for the future. They have Nick Suzuki, Caufield, and several other good young players. They're looking to solidify their core. - Pat Brisson As many have noticed, Caufield will earn less in average salary than the club's captain, Nick Suzuki. Number 22 will average $7.85M while the captain currently earns $7.875M. Brisson somewhat confirmed that this aspect was important and that it weighed heavily in the balance. However, it has given both sides headaches.
Brisson confirmed the rumor that CH wanted Suzuki to remain the highest paid.
Yes, it was important for the Canadiens not to exceed Nick's number," Brisson replied. "Suzuki is the captain. But there are aspects to clarify. Cole was five years from becoming an unrestricted free agent. In Suzuki's case, he was four years from becoming an unrestricted free agent when he got his extension. So, the Canadiens had one less year of autonomy to buy with Cole compared to Nick. That represents a lot of dollars.
"We looked at several comparisons for Cole," Brisson continued. "There were the contracts of Tim Stützle, Josh Norris, Dylan Cozens, and Matthew Boldy. So, Cole received a deal that compares with that of other young NHL stars. We found a fair contract Pat Brisson Really interesting.
We also learned that the negotiations were long but very cordial. It even seems that CH was ready to propose a contract to Caufield even before his operation, despite the risks of it. CH was not scared at all and had complete confidence in the healing process.
