Fans and management of the Montreal Canadiens woke up to some bad news this morning when they opened the newspaper and saw the updated rankings in the National Hockey League.

With the Florida Panthers' 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, and the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils, the Panthers have now secured a spot in the playoffs.

What a comeback! It's incredible that the Panthers managed to sneak into the playoffs.

This is, of course, bad news for the Montreal Canadiens, who hold Florida's 2023 first-round draft pick.

We had hoped that this pick would increase the Habs' chances of winning the Connor Bedard lottery, or at least have a real shot at becoming a top-4 or top-10 pick, but we can probably forget about that now.

This is a story to keep an eye on over the next week.
