Several were disappointed in the summer of 2009 to see Alex Kovalev leave the Montreal Canadiens organization in favor of the Ottawa Senators. The electric forward had signed a two-season contract valued at $10M. According to Kovalev himself, he should never have accepted that offer.
In a comprehensive interview with Alexandre Gascon for Radio-Canada, the man nicknamed l'Artiste talked about his time in Montreal, the pressure in the city and his departure from the organization. Here's what he had to say on the subject:
«I made a mistake and got a bit too greedy. On the other hand, I wanted to be shown respect, which I didn't receive. I wasn't asking for much more, just a small raise.
If I had to do it over, I would accept the Canadiens' offer rather than agree with the Senators in the summer of 2009. There would still be some bitterness because I wanted my contributions to the team recognized, but I think it would have been better for my career. I would probably say: OK, I'll take it even if they show me a little disrespect, but it's more important for my family and me.
I felt good in Montreal with the organization, with the fans. I think it's thanks to them that I had so much success.» - Alex Kovalev
On another note, Kovy touched on the sensitive topic of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Although he's aware that the current geopolitical situation might make it hard for a Russian to get this honor, he believes he deserves a spot.
«I think I deserve to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
If you compare me to some of the players who have been admitted, I've achieved more. But it's not my decision.
I deserve it because of everything I accomplished as a Russian player, both internationally and in the NHL. Nowadays, it's going to be even more difficult for some players to get in because of everything happening in the world.» - Alex Kovalev
In 1,316 NHL games, the Russian amassed 430 goals, 599 assists for a total of 1,029 points. He added another 100, including 45 goals, in 123 playoff games and has a Stanley Cup ring. While his name isn't often mentioned, his statistics and feats give pause for thought.
Since his retirement, Kovy has ventured into coaching. After coaching the Kunlun Red Stars in Beijing in the KHL, he began mentoring. He is currently assisting Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov and wouldn't decline the opportunity to help more players in their development.
