And what can we say about the start of the season of forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, his best career performance with 22 points, including 11 goals in 23 games. Even though he signed a one-season deal for $6 million last July, it is still too early to speculate on his future and as we know, many rumors were circulating last summer about his eventual arrival with the Habs.
However, he will only become an uncompensated free agent in the summer of 2024, which means that he will have to sign another contract of at least one with the Manitoba team before testing the free agent market.
But have the Jets management and the Dubois clan started negotiations for him to continue his career in Winnipeg?
As reported by Olivier Paiement of Danslescoulisses.com, it would appear not. During an interview with host Jean-Charles Lajoie on BPM Sports, Dubois remained rather vague about his future and mentioned that he did not want to talk about his contract in the middle of the season.
However, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic confirmed in a recent article that contract talks would only take place in the off-season and that there is no guarantee that Dubois would want to sign long-term in Winnipeg. He immediately confirmed the interest the Habs have shown in him in the past.
The interest of the Habs for the Quebec forward does not date from yesterday, because if we remember correctly, Marc Bergevin had tried to acquire him in the 2016 draft and when the Blue Jackets traded Dubois to Winnipeg in the winter of 2021, the former DG of the Habs had again manifested himself, but came out empty-handed in his approaches.
Will the third time be the charm? We will know the answer only in the summer of 2024, or even before.
