On the latest episode of the excellent Tony Marinaro's podcast, the highly reputable Aaron Portzline made a major statement regarding Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Portzline closely covers the activities of the Columbus Blue Jackets and has solid sources within the organization.

Last night, he stated that he has strong reasons to believe that when he requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2020, he already had firm intentions of becoming a player for the Montreal Canadiens.

He was hoping that Marc Bergevin would come and get him.

Portzline goes further. He strongly believes that in 2020, when he was a restricted free agent and his rookie contract had just ended with Columbus, Pierre-Luc Dubois really hoped that the Montreal Canadiens would make an offer sheet for him.

»Dubois expected, in my opinion, an offer sheet from the Montreal Canadiens. (in 2020)

Dubois believed he was going to leave Columbus (to join Montreal) and that's where the relationship with the Jackets deteriorated." - Aaron Portzline

And he would have absolutely accepted that offer from the Habs.

In fact, that's precisely why the Blue Jackets freed up a lot of cap space that summer by trading some defensemen. They wanted to put themselves in a position to match the likely offer sheet from the Habs.

Ultimately, as we know, that hostile offer never came.
