When the trade deadline came Monday afternoon, it was no surprise that defenseman Jeff Petry was still a member of the Habs.

The fact that Kent Hughes could not get what he wanted in return and the heaviness of his contract are obviously elements that did not play in favor of the Habs.

We mentioned earlier today that the Canadiens' defenseman came very close to being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in a deal that would have also involved forward James Van Riemsdyk.

But as Christian Matte of Marqueur.com reports, two other NHL teams could also be interested in Petry's services over the summer.

Sportsnet reporter Eric Engels mentioned the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars in an article earlier this week. They reportedly even have offers in mind.

The connection is easy to make with the Red Wings as Petry's family lives in Michigan and he could be a great mentor for young sensation Moritz Seider, who is a candidate for Rookie of the Year.

As for the Stars, general manager Jim Nill bet that the team would make the playoffs this year by keeping John Klingberg on the team. But Klingberg could very well leave Dallas when the free-agent market opens this summer, leaving room to acquire Petry.

And the Flyers could also still be considered for a potential trade, one involving Van Riemsdyk would still hold up according to Engels.

So it's going to be a busy summer for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton, with the draft coming up in Montreal and the free agent market, and it's safe to say they'll have their work cut out for them between now and then.
