Canadiens' Controversial Decision on Lane Hutson Sparks Backlash and Calls for Change
A decision by the Canadiens involving young defenseman Lane Hutson continues to be criticized by many fans and experts.
It's a choice that several have been denouncing since the start of the season, putting Mike Matheson on the first power-play unit while leaving Lane Hutson on the bench more often than not during five-on-four plays.
However, a decision made (specifically) during the game against the Buffalo Sabres seems to have been the last straw for some.
Why does the Canadiens persist in playing Mike Matheson over Lane Hutson on the power play, even during his off nights?
Many observers are calling for a change.
To some extent, it's understandable that Martin St-Louis might want to wait before "benching" his veteran and let Hutson earn the promotion. However, the problem is that the Canadiens' head coach isn't even attempting to make a switch, even in games where Matheson underperforms.
I understand, to some extent, the decision to take time before completely moving Mike Matheson off the top power play unit, but I didn't like how things went down YESTERDAY.
Mike was having a really poor game. Lane Hutson was playing great. I would have liked to see him on PP1.
«Hard coaching» is also about going with those who give you the best chance to win.
Especially when they're guys who will be part of your core for the next 20 years.
-Anthony Martineau
Specifically in Buffalo, the decision to persist with Matheson over Hutson didn't sit well with some.
What about you? What do you think?
Matheson, aged 30, is on pace for a 51-point season.
He averages 3 minutes and 18 seconds per game on the Montreal Canadiens' power play.
Hutson, aged 20, is also on pace for a 51-point season.
He averages 2 minutes and 27 seconds per game on the Montreal Canadiens' power play.
It will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds, but one thing is certain: we're lucky to have two strong offensive defensemen on the team. There isn't really a bad choice, but Martin St-Louis shouldn't be afraid to go with the player having the better game (in my humble opinion, at least).
