The executive vice president of hockey operations for the Montreal Canadiens , Jeff Gorton, has just given us an interesting response regarding the trade market.

While there has been much speculation that the Canadiens might trade another defenseman, such as Justin Barron, before the start of the new season, Jeff Gorton has now given a response on this matter.

Jeff Gorton believes the Canadiens no longer have a surplus of defensemen

At a press conference earlier today, Gorton mentioned that he does not consider his team to have too many defensemen at the moment.

Jordan Harris has been traded, Johnathan Kovacevic has been traded, and it seems that this might be it for now, even though young players like Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, and David Reinbacher could earn a spot on the regular roster in the coming weeks.

«On defense in particular, it's going to be a great battle at training camp to earn spots in the lineup.

Listen, you can't have too many defensemen. I don't think it's a problem for us here. Most of them are young, and if they have to start in the minors, they'll start in the minors. It's not a problem.»
- Jeff Gorton

He is clearly making his stance known. So don't be surprised if a young player like David Reinbacher starts the season with the Laval Rocket, and don't expect Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton to rush to the trade market to sell off defensemen.

This will definitely be a storyline to watch during camp.

Despite Gorton's statement, I still believe that Lane Hutson will start the season in the National Hockey League. He's too dominant and has already shown too much for anything else to happen.
