Trade finalized between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday: Defenseman David Savard was surprised
Not only were journalists and fans surprised on Sunday morning to see Jeff Petry's return to town; the players of the CH organization were too. In an interview with TVA Sports, veteran defenseman David Savard admitted his surprise.
We weren't necessarily expecting that, he confided. I knew there were talks for Mike [Hoffman] to leave this summer, but we didn't expect Jeff to come back - David Savard
The surprise quickly turned to joy as the Québécois rejoiced in the return of his former teammate. According to him, having another veteran defenseman to help the many young players in the organization will not be too much. Savard is not fooled, though; he knows that the chances of playing with Petry again are very slim as a trade is highly plausible in this case.
We're extremely happy to have him back. He's a guy who had a bit of a tougher season last year. His family wasn't with him all the time. Maybe things will change, I don't know exactly what's going to happen, and if it's the end of trades.
We lost a veteran in Joel Edmundson, so it's fun to have another older guy who can help the young players. - David Savard Savard still has two years left on his contract, valued at $3.5 million per season. Depending on the CH's performance and the progress of the young players, his name could very well appear in rumors at the next trade deadline.
He would be the perfect candidate to help a Cup-contending team. If not at the deadline, it's likely that the chances of seeing him leave next summer, much like Joel Edmundson recently, will be quite high.
