Less than two weeks before the highly anticipated 2024 draft, which will take place in Las Vegas, discussions are intensifying as the Canadiens currently hold the 5th and 26th overall picks in the first round.
Will that change?
Well, everything indicates that a trade involving Kent Hughes' 26th pick is genuinely in the works.
In the latest episode of the "Basu & Godin Notebook," journalist Arpon Basu revealed that there is about a 90% chance that the Canadiens will not draft at the 26th spot during the 2024 draft.
Wow, 90%!
The journalist also recalled that the Canadiens' executives took Cole Eiserman out to dinner and have shown a lot of interest in him over the past few days, the player who broke Cole Caufield's record with the American development program.
So, this will be a matter to watch and a serious possibility to keep in mind.
Let's see if Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton can work some draft floor magic again, but don't be surprised if the 26th pick is traded in the evening on draft day in Las Vegas.
Imagine, for instance, coming out of this draft with Ivan Demidov AND Cole Eiserman.
That would be a huge injection of talent into the Montreal Canadiens' offense.
Eiserman, 17, is 6 feet tall and weighs 197 pounds. He has amassed 58 goals and 89 points in 57 games, in addition to adding nine goals and 10 points in 7 games at the U18 World Championship.
He also added 25 goals and 34 points in 24 games in the USHL. It's phenomenal. We're talking about 83 goals in 81 games!
Eiserman is also one of the youngest players in the 2024 class (born on August 29) and could potentially be a 1st overall pick in 2025 if he were a few weeks younger.
