On this NHL trade deadline day, the Carolina Hurricanes have made a significant move by acquiring another center player.

Trade alert for Evgeny Kuznetsov, over for Jesperi Kotkaniemi?

It's a serious possibility.

"Will Jesperi Kotkaniemi be traded today? Or this summer? Or will his contract be bought out? He was the 4th center for the Hurricanes before acquiring Kuznetsov" - Via Simon-Olivier Lorange

The four center players for the Canes were:

Sebastian Aho
Jack Drury
Jordan Staal
Jesperi Kotkaniemi

It will now apparently be:

Sebastian Aho
Evgeny Kuznetsov
Jordan Staal
Jack Drury.

So, will Kotkaniemi end up spending the season in the stands? Even if they want to use him as a winger, with Jake Guentzel, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen, Martin Necas, Seth Jarvis, Jesper Fast, Stefan Noeser (whom the Canes love)... There really is no room for KK in the lineup anymore.

Don't be surprised if Kotkaniemi's contract is unfortunately bought out (with heavy penalties), or if the Hurricanes pay another team to "get rid of him".

What a sad turn of events for him.

"Jesperi Kotkaniemi has 1 goal and 5 points in his last 29 games.

I asked Rod Brind'Amour what he thought of KK's play recently, and he essentially told me he's not giving him the same ice time as before because Jack Drury is playing some big hockey." - Anthony Martineau

Unfortunately, Kotkaniemi brings nothing to the Canes.

Unless there's a major turnaround, yes, it seems to be already over for him there.
