We have had a lot of action with the Tampa Bay Lightning and in the Steven Stamkos situation, a case that Kent Hughes is closely monitoring.
In the last few hours, via trade, General Manager Julien BriseBois acquired defenseman Ryan McDonagh and his $6.75 million per year salary.
Considering the Lightning were already very tight under the salary cap, acquiring McDonagh only makes things worse.
How will they re-sign Steven Stamkos with so little money available? In any case, they seem to have a plan.
Julien BriseBois announces that their trade for Ryan McDonagh does not change the plans involving Steven Stamkos
This is indeed what was just announced publicly.
They have only $5 million under the salary cap, but they still believe in their chances of signing Stamkos. (They will need to work some magic)
"However, Lightning General Manager Julien BriseBois remains confident, as he stated that discussions with Stamkos are ongoing.
Indeed, BriseBois continues to believe that it will be possible to find common ground that benefits both parties. The Lightning GM states that nothing has changed with the Ryan McDonagh trade, and the priority remains to sign Steven Stamkos." - Via Mathis Therrien
Mathematically, it seems almost impossible, but let's wait and see.
Other analysts believe that BriseBois is trying to save face, but he acquired McDonagh to name him captain if Stamkos leaves.
Wow. This is a situation that will definitely keep people talking.
For obvious reasons, many observers believe that Steven Stamkos could truly become a free agent on July 1st. He could then sign with the team of his choice and accept the contract of his choice.
"Rumors will continue to fly around the NHL, especially those linking Stamkos to the Montreal Canadiens given his strong connection with head coach Martin St. Louis." - Mathis Therrien, DLC
Let's not forget that Stamkos scored 40 goals this season! (81 points in 79 games)
Credit and details:
Yes, he could bring a lot to the Montreal Canadiens and to Martin St. Louis' lineup.
