Among the teams to watch will be the Montreal Canadiens, who are expected to be sellers once again. Kent Hughes will be open to offers for some of his veteran players set to become free agents at the end of the season.
One of those players is defenseman David Savard, who, despite his value slightly decreasing this season, should attract interest from several teams looking for defensive depth ahead of the playoffs.
According to journalist Jonas Siegel, who works for The Athletic, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be a team to watch leading up to the deadline, and it appears the organization has interest in the Quebec-born defenseman.
Among the needs the Leafs need to address, according to Siegel, are acquiring a center and a top-four right-handed defenseman, which would make David Savard an excellent addition. He would bring a lot of stability to the defensive corps under head coach Craig Berube.
The journalist also mentioned the names of Colton Parayko from the St. Louis Blues, who represented Canada at the Four Nations Face-Off, as well as former Maple Leaf Luke Schenn, now with the Nashville Predators.
Now, the question is what Kent Hughes will be able to get in return for David Savard.
Some rumors suggest that a second-round pick could be the asking price set by the Canadiens' general manager.
But as we know with Kent Hughes, he has always managed to surprise us when it comes to trading his veterans at the deadline, and that could very well be the case again with David Savard.
Additionally, with one of their top defensemen, Chris Tanev, currently injured, the Leafs may feel more urgency to find a replacement.
