Although this defeat left a bitter taste in the fans' mouths, one of the primary concerns was undoubtedly the future of their captain, Patrice Bergeron. At 37 years old, the Quebecer is still without a contract for the next season and has mentioned that he wishes to take some time to reflect on his career, which might culminate in him announcing his retirement from professional hockey this summer.
In fact, we witnessed some heart-wrenching scenes after Game #7, as Bergeron appeared simply inconsolable, having possibly played his last game at TD Garden.
Even though the forward hasn't yet made his official decision about his future in the NHL, a player from the Bruins gave a worrying revelation by stating that he does not expect to see the captain and David Krejci return to the team next year.
Wow!
This would certainly be disastrous news for the Bruins, who also risk losing the services of forward Tyler Bertuzzi and defender Dmitry Orlov during the free agent market opening on July 1st.
A page of history seems to be slowly turning in Boston!
The Quebecer had a great season, racking up 27 goals and 31 assists in 71 games. He was also nominated for the Frank J. Selke trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward in the league.
Since his arrival in the NHL, Patrice Bergeron has amassed 427 goals and 613 assists (1040 points) in 1294 games with the Boston Bruins, becoming one of the league's best two-way centers.
In your opinion, has Patrice Bergeron played his last game in the NHL?
