Major announcement for Jesperi Kotkaniemi and it's confirmed for him
After another extremely difficult season, several analysts have spoken about an upcoming contract buyout or a potential trade for Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
Recently questioned on the subject, the Carolina Hurricanes forward announced his intentions for the future, confirming that he wants to stay with his current team.
However, does his current team still want him?
The truth is that their owner, Tom Dundon, is not like the others and he will never agree to pay nearly $5 million a year for a fourth-line player or a 13th forward.
He could outright ask his general manager to get rid of this heavy contract at any cost.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi breaks the silence and announces his intentions for the future
In a press conference as part of his team's end-of-season review, Kotkaniemi bluntly admitted his faults.
The Finn, who earns nearly $5 million a year until 2030, recorded 0 goals and 1 assist in 11 games during the 2024 playoffs.
He was completely invisible.
Kotkaniemi collected 12 points in his last 60 regular season games in 2024, which is extremely disappointing.
See his comments.
«Overall, it was crappy. The year was very difficult for me. [...] I could have done much better. I will try to forget it and focus on the next one. It will be like usual, trying to work hard to come back stronger and be ready next year.»
- Jesperi Kotkaniemi
Let's say that this statement is not very encouraging.
«We have to be smart about it. Maybe I should offer better hockey during the season first,» Kotkaniemi added when asked about the possibility of playing more physically.
It will be fascinating to see what the future holds for Kotkaniemi, but one thing is certain, this kind of statement won't earn him many points.
