The Halifax Mooseheads forward, Jordan Dumais, is completely dominating the QMJHL this season as he tops the league's best scorers. In 62 games, he has already accumulated an impressive total of 136 points, including 54 goals. Despite this harvest, he was only a third-round draft pick last year, 96th overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Despite the Blue Jackets' management signing his NHL entry contract last November, Dumais was not even retained by Team Canada Junior management as he was among the players cut during the final camp for the junior world championship, which was presented in front of his admirers in Halifax.
And if we rely on his Mooseheads head coach, there were even doubts about Jordan Dumais' potential last season.
In a telephone interview with TVA Sports.ca, Sylvain Favreau said that he even felt the need to challenge recruiters last year as few people seemed to be interested in the small Quebec forward.
"I challenged recruiters last year. When you watch video, show me how many times Jordan is no longer active in the game after being checked against the boards."
And the conversation ended there.
Hard to believe that the Blue Jackets could have drafted him as late as the third round. Favreau also mentioned that today, some scouts are biting their fingers for having underestimated Dumais.
"Some said, 'Well, maybe we missed our shot there.'
I can tell you that right now, the Blue Jackets believe they made a steal."
Even the Canadiens missed the young Quebec forward as Kent Hughes focused on Austrian Vinzez Rohrer of the Ottawa 67's with the 75th pick overall.
And while Dumais was still available at the 92nd spot, the organization preferred Swedish defender Adam Engstrom, who is still having a lot of success this season in Sweden.
Even if it's still too early to say that the Canadiens missed Jordan Dumais, if he ever became an important asset with the Blue Jackets, some fans will undoubtedly take pleasure in reminding Kent Hughes of this decision.
