In short, let's stick to the initial plan. Several veterans could leave the current organization and besides Ben Chiarot, the name of Brendan Gallagher is also talked about throughout the league. But some people believe that it will be difficult to get "Gally" out of Montreal because of the big pact that Marc Bergevin has given him.
However, through an article by Marc-Antoine Godin of The Athletic, several scouts indicated that at least 25 teams would have made him the same offer as Bergevin, 6 years at $6.5 million annually.
"When he signed his contract, I can confirm to you that there were 25 teams lined up to offer him the same contract and maybe even more. His reputation is excellent."
Number 11 is very effective, even if the current structure means he is less productive in goal, plus his leadership and energy are certainly contagious. Any aspiring team would certainly dream of having such a player on its roster.
In fact, if the Habs withheld 50% of his salary, one scout believes they could get their hands on a first-round pick and a good prospect.
"On the other hand, it's certain that if Montreal withheld salary, a 50%, they would probably be able to go out and get a first pick and maybe even a prospect as well, for Gallagher."
So, it can be done. Nothing is impossible if you firmly believe in it!
