See the tweet in question:
"Cole Caufield, are you there? Everyone says you're here, but we didn't notice. Did you miss the first half?"
The organization sent out a public message afterward to mention that the whole thing was just a joke.
"For the record, we know Caufield is the best player on the ice. The guy is amazing. It was just a joke."
Let's just say that the initial message was woefully unprofessional. It didn't fly under the radar. The AHL cracked down a bit on the Utica Comets, but nothing more. The league told the Comets that the Tweet was inappropriate and that they should not do it again.
Cole Caufield's father, Paul, really didn't find it funny. He lashed out at the Utica Comets, as well as the AHL for not taking the matter seriously. He literally fell off his chair. He defended his son, that's normal, but he also advocated for a cause that is particularly important to everyone, but also to the Montreal Canadiens.
I couldn't agree more with his comments. The AHL has literally made light of this issue. It's unprofessional, yes, but it's also poor judgment. I strongly believe that the AHL will reverse its decision and serve more severely, at least that is what I hope. It would send a clear message to the teams in the league to be quiet.
