On this Wednesday morning, March 30th, the Habs organization has just announced great news: they have just signed the second best scorer in the QMJHL this season, Joshua Roy.
Who are the only 18 year old players to have won the QMJHL scoring championship since 2010, as reported by Mikaël Lalancette?
Sean Couturier, Conor Garland and Alexis Lafreniere. Solid company for Roy, potentially. Remember that the Habs only had to use a fifth round pick (150th overall) to get their hands on this very promising player.
A real steal at the draft, because it is 100% certain that if we had to do the 2021 NHL draft again, Roy would go in the first round.
The CH's management (the ones in place last summer) managed to transform a 5th round pick into a 1st round pick, that's major for an organization.
Definitely a name to watch, maybe a future star player for the Habs.
Here's the official announcement:
«Kent Hughes announced Wednesday that the team has agreed to terms on a three-season entry-level contract with forward Joshua Roy (2022-2023 to 2024-2025).
The deal will pay Roy $750,000 in the NHL in 2022-2023 and includes a $92,500 signing bonus, while he will earn $10,500 if he plays in junior. The contract will pay Roy $775,000 in the NHL for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons, plus signing bonuses of $92,500 (2023-2024) and $85,000 (2024-2025). Roy will earn a salary of $80,000 per season in the American league.
The 18-year-old Roy ranks second in the QMJHL in scoring with 92 points (36 goals, 56 assists) in 50 games for the Sherbrooke Phoenix this season.
The 6'00", 186-pound left winger is playing in his third season in the Courteau Circuit and has 171 points (74 goals, 97 assists) in 145 games since 2019 with the Phoenix and the Saint John Sea Dogs, who selected him first overall in the 2019 QMJHL draft.
Roy was selected in the fifth round (150th overall) by the Canadiens in the 2021 NHL Draft." - Montreal Canadiens
