New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello answered questions from reporters at a press conference, and agreed to talk about his important transaction with the Montreal Canadiens (concluded at the 2022 draft)
This one:
To the Islanders:
Alexander Romanov (LD)
98th overall pick 2022
vs.
Montreal:
13th overall pick 2022
--------------
In Montreal:
Kirby Dach (C)
vs.
Chicago:
13th overall pick 2022
66th overall pick 2022
A three-team deal that really took fans by surprise.
Anyway, Lamoriello went back to this important trade and confirmed that it was Kent Hughes who approached him.
The Montreal Canadiens general manager was obviously willing to offer Romanov to any team that offered him a mid-first round pick (because that's what the Chicago Blackhawks wanted for Kirby Dach)
In the end, it was Lou Lamoriello who took the bait and agreed to do it.
The 26th overall pick, which was eventually used to draft Filip Mesar, was not high enough for Davidson (Chicago GM). It's interesting to learn more about the behind-the-scenes of this trade, and to better understand why and how Kent Hughes agreed to trade young Alex Romanov.
