Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens will officially be penalized by the National Hockey League for the start of the 2023-24 season.
Unfortunately, the Montreal organization exceeded the performance bonus limit for its players this season (2022-23), which will result in a reduction of their salary cap by $1.170 million to start next season. Ouch.
Among the players who reached a performance bonus this season are Sean Farrell, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Justin Barron, Kaiden Guhle, and Jordan Harris.
As a result, GM Kent Hughes will have to deal with a salary cap of $81.33 million, which is $1.17 million less than the usual limit of $82.5 million.
In comparison, the Boston Bruins will have a reduction of $4.5 million in their salary cap for the start of next season.
This is an important factor to keep in mind, as it could potentially hinder Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton in some aspects.
