The team led by Rod Brind'Amour sits second overall with the Florida Panthers at the time of this writing, and it's clear that Carolina general manager Don Waddell will want to add depth to his team.
Among the Hurricanes' needs for the playoffs, it's on defense that Waddell will want to look at his options, and there is something interesting here. In 2020 the Hurricanes were very interested in acquiring defenseman Jeff Petry, and at that point they were willing to give away nothing less than a first-round pick and Jake Bean, now with the Blue Jackets, in return for number 26. It would have been a great return for CH, but the trade never happened.
And now that Petry asked for a trade a few months ago and is having a season way off his usual standards, his value has certainly gone down.
Could Don Waddell take advantage of the situation to acquire Petry at a much more reasonable price than two years ago?
It's possible, especially since Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo is sidelined for a few more weeks with an injury. At that point, it is logical to think that the Habs defender could very well become an excellent alternative.
Remember that a couple of great insiders revealed last week that the Canes were really interested in a Habs defenseman.
