This means that the organization will need to find a new player to wear the 'A' on his jersey for the upcoming season, and as reported by the site Danslescoulisses.com, a few names have already been put forward.
At the moment, Brendan Gallagher is the only assistant. During an interview on TSN 690, Sean Campbell and Mitch Gallo discussed the situation.
First and foremost, one might easily think of veterans like David Savard, Josh Anderson, Michael Matheson, and Sean Monahan, who would be excellent candidates to be the new assistant captain for the Canadiens.
In fact, Gallo mentioned that he would go with a rotation of five assistants with the four players I named, which is quite unusual in an NHL team.
But where the conversation got interesting was when Sean Campbell proposed the names of Cole Caufield and Kaiden Guhle.
In the case of Caufield, Campbell sees him very fitting with an 'A' on his jersey, particularly because of his status within the team.
As for Guhle, he has already shown leadership qualities in the past and in the future, it would only be a formality if he became an assistant captain. We remember that he was named captain of Team Canada during the World Junior Championship in 2022, before the tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
That said, it is still unknown what the selection process will be for the next assistant captain. Will it be the players or the management who will have a say in the final decision?
But the fact that Guhle and Caufield are being considered is excellent news in itself, as it shows that the Canadiens are banking not only on two excellent young players but also on leaders who will instill the right values in their teammates.
