Without fanfare, Kent Hughes has just pulled off another great move to help the Montreal Canadiens' next star player. It was certainly a bold decision for GM Hughes to make the trip to the KHL, especially given the current context, but it was also a rewarding one.

Even though he was criticized by some experts and journalists here in Quebec (for going there and for meeting with Roman Rotenberg), the results are impressive.

He seems to have genuinely helped the case of the Montreal Canadiens' top prospect.

Ivan Demidov is suddenly playing a lot more with SKA since the trip by Kent Hughes, Vincent Lecavalier, and Nick Bobrov

Demidov went from a player who played 4-5 minutes per game with SKA and was even benched to a player now used on their first or second line.

This is huge for the young player's development, and while I don't know what was said between Kent Hughes and Roman Rotenberg, the results are truly impressive.

These are his stats since Habs management made the trip to meet Demidov's SKA coach:

Another great reminder of Kent Hughes' exceptional negotiation talents.

He's excellent at closing trades, he's excellent at signing contracts.. And now it's clear he's also excellent at developing the Montreal Canadiens' top prospects.

We love it.

Ivan Demidov, the Habs' 5th overall pick in 2024, has racked up 31 points in 40 games this season with SKA, and he is making history in the KHL as a 19-year-old.

He clearly should never have fallen to the Canadiens at the fifth pick, and we can count ourselves very lucky to have such a talented young player within the organization.
