Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes continues to work extremely hard on the trade market to improve his team.

As we reported a few days ago, prior to his trade to the San Jose Sharks, the well-known Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Kent Hughes was in the running to acquire young goalie Yaroslav Askarov.

Even though Askarov ultimately wasn't traded to Montreal, Friedman's report still reveals something interesting.

Kent Hughes is still looking for a goalie on the trade market

Clearly, the Canadiens' management feels they need to acquire another goaltender.

«However, with the Habs' interest in Askarov, we can still draw some conclusions.

Indeed, learning that the Canadiens discussed Askarov with the Preds might suggest that Kent Hughes is still searching for a number-one goalie, or that he simply wants to strengthen the goaltending position, despite the presence of Samuel Montembeault

We're not saying that Kent Hughes is aggressively trying to acquire another goalie, but he's certainly open to the idea, especially if it's for a young talent with high potential.

Speaking of young goalies with high potential, two names stand out.

The first is Spencer Knight:

«The Panthers' management has made decisions regarding goaltender Spencer Knight.

I've been told that the Panthers aren't necessarily offering him to other teams, but that hasn't stopped the inquiries and offers.»

- David Pagnotta

Knight's name is therefore circulating on the NHL trade market.

We're talking about a 23-year-old goalie, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 192 pounds, who was drafted 13th overall in 2019 (1st round).

Last season, Spencer Knight posted a record of 25 wins, 14 losses, and 5 overtime losses in the AHL. Over his NHL career, he boasts an impressive record of 32-17-6, with a 2.41 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

He's definitely a name to watch.

Devon Levi as well?

The second name mentioned by the columnist is that of Quebec-born goaltender Devon Levi, 22 years old, who seems to have fallen behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in the Buffalo Sabres' goaltending hierarchy.

Do you think the Canadiens need another promising young goaltender before completing their rebuild?
