Last week, Hockey Canada revealed, in response to the league's announcement about the Olympics, that Doug Armstrong will have the task of building the Canadian team for this event. Along with Ryan Getzlaf and Scott Salmond, he will have the task of assembling a team that can win the gold medal!
In addition to choosing the players who will make up the team, Armstrong will also be responsible for selecting the coaching staff. On this subject, in a recent edition of the Sortie de zone podcast, host Jérémie Rainville asked his guests, Richard Labbé, Simon-Olivier Lorange, Stéphane Waite, if Martin St-Louis will receive an invitation to be part of this group.
If the guests believe that it's a bit premature regarding St-Louis because he hasn't achieved anything yet, Rainville does not share this view. According to him, the head coach of the Canadiens is a great leader and is part of the Hockey Canada family for having often participated in international events.
Simon-Olivier Lorange, even if he does not see MSL behind Canada's bench in two years, still brings up many excellent points. As he mentions, John Cooper was supposed to be the head coach of Team Canada at the last Olympics. It would not be surprising if he, should he be selected again by Armstrong and his group, chooses St-Louis because he knows him well from their time together in Tampa.
Another interesting point from Lorange, even though he does not see MSL behind Canada's bench in two years, it's worth recalling, is about understanding the game. While he himself describes this aspect as esoteric, he thinks that St-Louis could finally find players capable of thinking like him.
Nonetheless, it might still be too early to see the head coach of the CH behind Team Canada's bench. However, he might have a better chance for the 2030 games, depending on what he has accomplished with the Habs.
