Martin St-Louis Responds to Patrik Laine Immediately After He Criticized Himself in Press Conference
Despite scoring three goals, Patrik Laine was very critical during the press conference after the game against the Buffalo Sabres. He didn't hold back in criticizing his own play and was very hard on himself.
As we reported earlier today, he didn't hesitate to describe his performance as "very average," which obviously surprised many.
This happens at the very beginning of the following video:
He indeed mentioned that he had a rather mediocre game:
«If we ignore the goals, I've played millions of better games where I didn't score a single goal.
On the power play, the puck went in.
Other than that, I'd say it was a pretty average performance for me today...»

A few minutes after Laine's comments, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis was immediately asked about the matter, and he responded:
But Martin St-Louis was more measured than the star of the night, who tends to be hard on himself.
«He's honest, but I didn't hate him at five-on-five. I don't think he played a bad game. His pace is improving, and Newy is helping him with that.»

MSL then added:
«They're learning to play together, and that's something that happens organically. You can give them some guidelines, but you have to be careful not to over-direct them.»
All in all, it was a memorable moment from the post-game press conferences.
Personally, I believe Laine can still be very proud of his performance. He has every right to be hard on himself, but he also needs to give himself a chance.
He's barely played hockey over the past year and a half.
