Surprise statement involving Juraj Slafkovsky and Logan Cooley: an expert has just made his mea culpa
A few days ago, we looked back in a column on Juraj Slafkovsky's start to the season and his detractors who would have preferred the CH to select Logan Cooley in his place during the draft. At that time, few people thought that the 1st overall pick of the 2022 draft would surpass the one who had been selected in the 3rd rank.
Tony Marinaro had at that time expressed an opinion on the airwaves of BPM Sports that many shared.
I'm already ready to say that Logan Cooley will be a better hockey player than Juraj Slafkovsky. He has a vision of the game, a skating ability, a passing skill, and he is a playmaker. He's a guy who makes the guys around him better!" - Tony Marinaro, BPM Sports
A few months later, things have drastically changed. So much so that the colorful analyst was willing to make his mea culpa. During a recent intervention, he admitted he never thought the young Slovak would be capable of developing in such a way.
Even if we still have to wait to see Slaf's ceiling, we can say that the last few weeks have been good and especially very encouraging. The Slovak seems to have gained confidence and is on an excellent streak.
Things are going so well that we're starting to compare the CH's number 20 to the first overall pick of the 2019 draft, Jack Hughes.
As for Cooley, he has accumulated 25 points, including 6 goals, in 51 games with the Arizona Coyotes. On his side, Slafkovsky now has 29 points, including 12 goals, in 54 games with the CH this season.
We will wait a bit longer before comparing the careers of Slafkovsky with Cooley or even Hughes but it's very promising.
