A story flew under the radar today but could have a big impact on Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.

The Vegas Golden Knights, who are the next opponents of Martin St-Louis' squad, announced earlier today the signing of forward Brett Howden.

A 5-year contract worth a total of $12.5 million, ($2.5 million per year).

A contract that could make Jake Evans' mouth water

Howden's contract will certainly serve as a benchmark in the negotiations for Evans' upcoming deal, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) next summer.

Howden is certainly a solid comparison for Jake Evans, but the Canadiens' forward appears to be slightly better, so it's reasonable to expect more than $2.5 million per year for Evans.

Howden, 26, has recorded 9 points in 20 games this season after tallying 19 points in 72 games last season (a total plus/minus of -13).

Over the last three years, he has averaged 27 points per 82 games.

Evans, 28, has recorded 10 points in 19 games this season after notching 28 points in 82 games last season (a total plus/minus of -2).

Over the last three years, he has averaged 30 points per 82 games.

This shows they are similar players, with the Canadiens' forward seeming to have the edge.

With all this in mind, would you be willing to offer Jake Evans around $12.5 million over 5 years?
