Wild 5-asset trade proposal could send Dawson Mercer to Montreal

It's no coincidence that Elliotte Friedman confirmed that the Canadiens were in on a trade for Yaroslav Askarov.

The arrival of the Finnish forward has just filled a huge hole in the top 6 of the Canadiens' offense, and the price Hughes paid, Jordan Harris, wasn't too steep, much to the delight of the fans.

However, as reported by Marqueur, the price would have been considerably higher to acquire a Trevor Zegras, a Martin Necas, or even a Rutger McGroarty, and columnist Dave Jenkins just proved it with a trade proposal involving the Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils for a top 6 forward.

Even though it's only a proposal, it shows the value Dawson Mercer could have on the trade market, despite a more challenging 2023-2024 season where he recorded 33 points in 82 games, but still scored 20 goals.

A first-round pick by the Devils in the 2020 draft, the former Drummondville Voltigeurs and Chicoutimi Saguenéens player tallied 56 points, including 27 goals, the previous season, finishing fifth in scoring on his team.

However, if Kent Hughes ever wanted to acquire him, it would likely take more than Filip Mesar and Owen Beck to convince Tom Fitzgerald, the Devils' GM, to make a deal.
