Patrick Roy: huge turnaround and new staff change in New York
Do you remember that wild story involving Benoit Desrosiers and Patrick Roy?
In short, earlier this month, many media outlets reported the hiring of Benoit Desrosiers by the New York Islanders and Patrick Roy following a post by Stéphane Leroux from RDS.
"Patrick Roy's first move: Olympiques head coach Benoit Desrosiers, who was his assistant with the Remparts, is joining him in New York. Serge Beausoleil will return to service behind the bench."
"Benoit Desrosiers (35 years old) will have coached the Olympiques for 45 games before making the jump to the NHL.
The Olympiques, in the midst of a playoff race, can now count on the expertise of GM Serge Beausoleil who has 765 games of experience behind the bench." - Via Stéphane Leroux, from RDS
Then things took a strange turn. First, the New York Islanders released this statement:
"Statement: Benoit Desrosiers has not been hired by the New York Islanders. It is planned that President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello will meet with Desrosiers in the future." - New York Islanders
Then, the Gatineau Olympiques added by mentioning that Desrosiers was still their head coach.
New developments today in this saga involving Benoit Desrosiers and Patrick Roy
In the last few minutes, journalist Mikaël Lalancette announced this:
"Confirmed: Serge Beausoleil becomes interim head coach of the Olympiques. Benoit Desrosiers officially leaves for New York."
- Via Mikaël Lalancette
Hoping he has very solid sources, but Lalancette is an excellent journalist so let's trust him.
So it seems that in the end, Desrosiers will indeed join Patrick Roy in New York! We are extremely happy for him. It would have been such a shame if it hadn't materialized.
It didn't take too long after all.
Update: it's official this time!
