While it's certain that we would have preferred to have better mathematical odds of getting our hands on the next generational talent, a statistic reported by Marco Normandin from the site HF However, it gives us a glimmer of hope. In fact, since the introduction of the NHL draft lottery in 1995 (under the old format), only 11 of the 28 teams that finished in last place have obtained the first overall pick. This means that 61% of first overall picks were obtained by teams that didn't have the best chance to get it.
The last team to obtain the 1st pick with the highest probability? The Montreal Canadiens last season... If trends continue and we rely on statistics, the chances of seeing the 32nd position of the current season getting Bedard are therefore slim.
Don't be surprised if there's a turnaround and Bedard ends up with an unexpected team (other than the Blue Jackets, Sharks or Ducks)
However, it would be better for the Habs to finish 28th, not 27th ahead of the Yotes. That 1% could make all the difference in the end!
It hurts, but Go Bruins Go?
We'll have a better idea of each team's chances in a few days as the NHL season comes to an end. The draft lottery will take place on May 8th at 7:00 PM, live on television.
