The draft was at the Bell Centre and the Canadiens held the very first overall draft pick.
Nearly two years later, it can be said that the new leadership was right. In addition to acquiring Kirby Dach via trade, the Habs selected, among others, Juraj Slafkovsky with their very first pick and young Lane Hutson with the 62nd selection. If the selection of the young Slovak turned out to be excellent (see his recent progress), that of the defenseman could very well be a steal.
According to what RDS analyst Stéphane Leroux thinks, Hutson could not only go in the first round if this draft were redone, but also in the top-10!
Adding a top-10 talent with a 62nd overall pick, that's huge!
To help you see who Hutson would have outperformed, here's who was selected in the top ten in 2022:
1. Montreal Canadiens: Juraj Slafkovsky, LW
2. New Jersey Devils: Simon Nemec, D
3. Arizona Coyotes: Logan Cooley, C
4. Seattle Kraken: Shane Wright, C
5. Philadelphia Flyers: Cutter Gauthier, LW
6. Columbus Blue Jackets: David Jiricek, D
7. Chicago Blackhawks: Kevin Korchinski, D
8. Detroit Red Wings: Marco Kasper, C
9. Buffalo Sabres: Matthew Savoie, C
10. Anaheim Ducks: Pavel Mintyukov, D
Hutson, 20, has dominated this season in the NCAA with Boston University. He finished his second campaign in college with 15 goals, 34 assists for a total of 49 points, in 37 games.
He will participate, with his team, in the Frozen Four, next April 11th, getting closer and closer to a championship conquest. We will know at that time when he can finally sign his NHL entry contract and join the Habs for the end of the season.
He is about to be added to the Habs' lineup.
