Yesterday's game between the Canadiens and the Boston Bruins was a high-quality duel. The rivalry was palpable, and it was great to see.
It's worth noting that it had been a long time since we'd felt such animosity between the two teams, partly because the Canadiens hadn't been playing at the same level as their rivals for a few years.
Before yesterday's victory, Boston had won the last ten games between the two teams.
The third period really ignited tensions, with two quick goals by the Canadiens, followed by a disallowed goal for the Bruins. This ramped up the players' intensity, leading to several skirmishes featuring all players on the ice.
Everyone was so involved that it nearly led to a goalie fight, with Jeremy Swayman inviting Samuel Montembeault to a fight towards the end of the third period.
The Bruins' goalie stared down Montembeault, who did not back down. A goalie fight would have certainly electrified the Bell Centre.
Here is the video of the entire sequence:
After the match, Monty even commented on what happened on the ice between him and Swayman.
"I saw that he was signaling to me. He wanted me to go, but I didn't want to. I told Martin (St-Louis) that I don't hit hard enough anyway. I think the loss will hurt him more.' Samuel Montembeault"
Montembeault ultimately had the last word over Swayman with his team's overtime victory.
