We have a surprising last-minute development on NHL waivers. A few times a year, a veteran with a relatively high annual salary is unexpectedly placed on NHL waivers.

We've seen this with Montreal Canadiens forward Joel Armia, and now it's Stanley Cup Champion Brandon Saad's turn to face the same fate.

See the official announcement.

According to insider David Pagnotta, the Blues tried to trade Brendon Saad, but without success. He still has one year remaining with a $4.5M AAV, and an actual salary of $3.63M.

This will be a major story to follow in the coming hours in the National Hockey League.

Saad, 32, is a 6-foot-1, 215-pound forward who was a second-round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011.

He has recorded 16 points in 43 games this season and 42 points last season with the Blues, including a total of 33 goals.

In his NHL career, Saad has accumulated 515 points in 906 regular-season games, along with 55 points in 103 playoff games.

He was a key player in the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup runs in 2012-13 and 2014-15 alongside Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

Could he be an option to replace Michael Pezzetta in a bottom-six role for St. Louis and the Canadiens? We'll find out tomorrow at 2:00 PM.

More details to follow.
