The cash prizes for Canadian athletes (and athletes from other countries) who win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have just been revealed.
It's incredible to see the immense difference between countries.
Thanks to the article by Sarah-Florence Benjamin from the Journal de Montréal, we actually learn how much money Canadian athletes (and those from other countries) will receive if they win a medal at these Olympic Games, which are being held in France.
«Olympic medals don't hold the same value for all athletes. Since no cash prize is associated with the medals, it's the countries that decide to rewardor nottheir athletes. They also determine the size of the prize.»
- Sarah-Florence Benjamin
So, you understand that the amounts awarded to athletes who win a medal are very different from one country to another.
We also quickly realize that our Canadian athletes are not so well rewarded compared to their competitors.
Please note that the following bonuses are based on the current 2024 games, but also on the Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympics.
Here are the cash prizes for our Canadian athletes who will win a medal, compared to those of other countries
Here are some examples.

You can find the full report in the Journal de Montreal article (the link is at the bottom of this article), but note that a gold medal brings nearly $300,000 CAD in Malaysia and Morocco.
In Morocco, an athlete who finishes in 25th position still receives $6,979 CAD. (and nearly $30,000 CAD for an 8th position, for example)
In Italy, a gold medalist receives $270,000 CAD.
In short, many countries give well over $100,000 in bonuses to their Olympic medalists, but in Canada, the maximum prize is $20,000 for a gold medal.
