When Jesse Ylonen signed his agreement, everyone thought we would have an announcement shortly after regarding the goaltender.
However, that was not the case.
Instead of reassuring his goalie, he put him in a somewhat concerning situation by acquiring another goaltender, Casey DeSmith. If the GM contacted the one nicknamed Monty to tell him not to worry, the fact remains that, unless something changes, he will start the next season in his final contract year.
In a recent Tweet, journalist Marc-Antoine Godin mentioned that negotiations were at a standstill between the two parties. He even stated that every good performance in Montembeault's next season will hinder CH's chances of signing him at a low price.
To pay a fair price (from CH's side, not Monty's), Hughes will need to hurry to resolve the matter. On this topic, hockey analyst Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, like many others, believes that an agreement around $3M per season for 3 or 4 years would be fair. Beaudoin bases his figures on recent contracts of Karel Vejmelka (3 x $2.725M) and Filip Gustavsson (3 x $3.75M).
In his last press conference, Hughes mentioned having a specific plan with his goalies. He said he believes he can resolve the congestion in front of the net without having to send DeSmith, who is waiver-eligible, to Laval. Does this plan include a trade? Quite possible.
The Montembeault case will certainly be resolved once the GM's plan is set in motion.
