Special statement about Jonathan Drouin from one of his new teammates on the Avalanche
Jonathan Drouin's time in the Canadiens' uniform definitely didn't unfold as many had hoped. Hopes and expectations were high when he was traded on June 15, 2017, in exchange for Mikhail Sergachev.
The defenseman emerged as a key figure for the Tampa Bay Lightning, but the Quebecois forward did not live up to the franchise player expectations. Many rue this trade, particularly seeing the player Sergachev has developed into. Their sentiments were echoed when Kent Hughes ended the Quebecois' tenure with the Habs on July 1st.
Instead, Drouin reached terms on a one-season contract worth $825,000 with the Colorado Avalanche, hoping to revive his career alongside his former teammate from the Halifax Mooseheads, Nathan MacKinnon.
One of his new teammates, the outstanding defenseman Cale Makar, recently commented on Drouin's arrival to their organization. The now front figure of EA Sports' latest video game, NHL24, had only good words for the Quebecois.
"I don't know him personally, but I know Nathan was super excited when he found out [Drouin] was signing with us. I think that says a lot. Drouin is a player with undeniable offensive talent, and I believe he can perform well defensively too, so I'm definitely excited about his arrival." - Cale Makar
This is a tremendous vote of confidence from the recipient of the Norris Trophy and the Conn-Smythe Trophy in 2022. He seems very pleased with Drouin's acquisition and is looking forward to seeing what the reunion between Drouin and MacKinnon will bring.
"Their connection with Nathan [MacKinnon] is special. They were so electrifying together in juniors. We all hope they'll rediscover their chemistry." - Cale Makar
Such comments about Jonathan coming from the world's best defenseman are certainly very special for him. We sincerely wish him the best of luck with his new club.
