We wanted to pay particular attention to two goalies, namely Erik Kallgren and Cal Petersen.
They are currently on waivers.
Petersen is a very interesting case. He was seen as one of the top goaltending prospects in the entire NHL in 2020 (along with the likes of Ilya Sorokin and Jake Oettinger).
He had completely dominated the NCAA and the AHL, in addition to maintaining an extremely impressive efficiency rate of 0.923 in his first two seasons in the NHL, behind a Los Angeles Kings team in full reconstruction (goal against average of 2.61).
Everything was going well. Robin Lehner even rated him as one of the top five goalies in the world.
Petersen then secured the position of the Kings' number one goalie, with an efficiency of 0.911 in 35 games in 2021.
Then, in 2022-23, everything collapsed for him (after signing a contract worth $5 million per season) and he was placed on waivers by the Kings, before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers.
And now, Daniel Brière has in turn placed him on waivers.
Will Petersen, who earns five million per season until 2025, be able to find his talent from two years ago? Will a team give him one last chance?
The answer will come tomorrow, but don't expect Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens to claim him. They ignored him last year and they already have to deal with three goalies.
As for Kallgren, he is 26 and has 24 games of experience with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He can certainly be an interesting name for a club like the Tampa Bay Lightning.
