Since the announcement of Auston Matthews' monster contract signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs, many observers are seriously wondering how they can bring in other good players.

In fact, we can squarely ask how they can even simply keep their own players.

After all, we're talking about three forwards taking up a huge chunk of the money available under the NHL's salary cap:

"These contracts indeed make the Habs look really good.

Matthews - $13.25M
Tavares - $11M
Marner - $10.9M

Suzuki - $7.875M
Caufield - $7.85M
Dach - $3.3M"

Being in Montreal, it's indeed tempting to draw a parallel with the contracts recently signed by our three top forwards.

We're not saying that Suzuki-Caufield-Dach are better than Matthews-Tavares-Marner, but they cost significantly less, and that makes a big difference.

It could get worse for the Maple Leafs!

In his most recent podcast, here's what the renowned Elliotte Friedman mentioned.

"What will Marner's next salary be? Because he was closest to Matthews. When Matthews signed for $11.634 million, so now that Matthews is making $13.25 million, what is Marner worth? Is it $13,249,999?" - Elliotte Friedman

For an 8-season deal, that would be a contract worth nearly $106 million in total, in addition to Matthews' contract.

And with William Nylander's contract coming up, and considering he's asking for more than $10 million per season, there's a real sense that a big departure is brewing in Toronto (probably Nylander's).

Very big decisions are imminent for the Maple Leafs! Things are going to shake up!

Marner, 26, has accumulated 99 and 97 points over the past two seasons.

Nylander, 27, has scored 87 and 80 points over the last two seasons.
