Despite the numerous injuries suffered by the Canadiens' defensemen this season, it must be said that some young defensemen have stepped up in recent weeks, such as Justin Barron, who is probably playing his best hockey since arriving in Montreal.

But in a few years, the organization could have a surplus of defensemen, especially if Logan Mailloux, Jayden Struble, and the young sensation Lane Hutson join the CH and all develop into NHL-caliber players.

Let's do a little exercise here and project ourselves four or five years into the future. Let's try to imagine Montreal's top 6 defensemen, assuming all these young players develop as hoped.

Kaiden Guhle - Logan Mailloux
Lane Hutson - Justin Barron
Jordan Harris - Arber Xhekaj

It's starting to look like a very solid defensive brigade. By the way, if I forgot to include Jayden Struble's name, it's because he still hasn't signed his contract with the organization.

But as reported by Mathis Therrien of the Danslescoulisses.com website, this surplus of quality young defensemen could both give Kent Hughes a headache and give him more ammunition when it comes time to make certain transactions.

Remember the Alexander Romanov trade at the last draft at the Bell Centre?

That trade allowed the Canadiens to acquire Kirby Dach, and let's just say Hughes has been lucky so far with that transaction.

And if the Canadiens' organization were to use the same formula in the future by sacrificing a young defenseman, as was the case with Romanov?

This point was raised by the columnist, who wondered who among the Canadiens' young defensemen could be the chosen one, and after this exercise, Jordan Harris was selected.

In fact, it came down to him and Justin Barron, but the fact that the latter is a right-handed defenseman played in his favor.

I'm not saying that Harris will be traded, but he could have excellent trade value eventually.

We can all agree that Kaiden Guhle and Arber Xhekaj are essential to the team's future success, and that Lane Hutson represents a very exciting project for the organization. As for Mailloux, we'll have to wait a bit longer.

In conclusion, it's not a guarantee that the proposed top 6 will actually be in place one day, but currently, if Kent Hughes had to sacrifice a young defenseman to improve his team, it could be Jordan Harris.

Now I'll ask you the question.

Will Harris be the next Romanov and be traded because of the surplus on his side of the defense?
