We experienced our first dramatic twist of the season yesterday when the Pittsburgh Penguins put young defenseman Ty Smith on waivers.

And this, in the first week of camp! It's rare to see that!

It took many by surprise, and the majority of experts expect Smith to be claimed in a few minutes (by 2 PM).

Let's remember, due to their final position in last season's standings, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens are among the first clubs able to get their hands on Ty Smith (for free).

We are talking here about a 23-year-old left-handed defenseman, drafted 17th overall in 2018 by the New Jersey Devils, who was traded to the Penguins last summer for John Marino.

Smith has nearly 50 points in 123 career NHL games (which is solid), and he has amassed 24 points in 39 AHL games.

He is an offensive, mobile, and still promising defenseman.

Will this bring a reversal of the situation in defense for the Canadiens, will Kent Hughes decide to claim him?

It would be an acquisition in the same vein as Alex Newhook, but free.

One thing is for sure, stay tuned because things are going to shake up in the National Hockey League at 2 PM.
