After some had lost hope in him, Primeau responded with a strong finish to the season in the American Hockey League
He is playing well as he approaches the big decision next fall.
Indeed, let us remember that next season, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will have a big decision to make.
1- Keep primeau with the Canadiens
2- Put him on NHL waivers.
As reported by Charles-Alexis Brisebois, to extend his audition and avoid option two, there may be a possible solution
It would be a surprise and a first for the Habs in a long time, but Martin St-Louis could start the 2023-24 season with three goalies.
In preparation for next season, the team has three goalies under contract (Jake Allen, Samuel Montembeault, and Cayden Primeau), and none of them can freely join the Rocket. They are all eligible for waivers starting next year.
According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, the Habs could indeed start the next season with three goalies on the NHL club. It is reasonable to think that one of the three (Allen, Montembeault, Primeau) will be traded this summer, but if it does not materialize, all three could stay with the Habs, and one of them would always be in the stands.
This would not be ideal and would take away a spot in the lineup for a skater, but it would be a serious option.
