The veteran center is used on the first wave of the power play and is possibly the best scorer of Martin St-Louis' squad along with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki.
However, as reported by William Boivin, from Rumeursdetransaction.com, number 91 will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and it is very likely that Kent Hughes will trade him to a Stanley Cup contender by the trade deadline.
His salary of $1.985 million makes him very appealing to teams looking for depth for the playoffs, and as insider Marc-Olivier Beaudoin reported a few days ago, Monahan is on the list of players likely to be traded at the deadline.
That said, we had already mentioned here that the Boston Bruins might be interested in Monahan's services, but now another team well known to Habs fans would be interested in him.
According to the website NHL Trade Rumors, the Toronto Maple Leafs would like to add another center to their roster and Monahan could fit well with the team and bring an extra touch to the offense.
Additionally, the Leafs' general manager knows him very well as he is the same person who traded him to Montreal in the summer of 2022, namely Brad Treliving.
It would be somewhat ironic if he were to acquire him through a trade. He would be fixing one of his big mistakes, but with another club.
It will be interesting to follow the development of this story over the next few weeks, but we especially hope that Sean Monahan avoids the infirmary, as we could see a scenario similar to last year where Kent Hughes was unable to trade him when the trade deadline came.
One thing is certain, there will be a lot of interest in Monahan in the NHL, which could lead to a profitable bidding war for our Habs.
