The information is already known to many, but it's always absolutely fascinating to revisit it, especially as Sportsnet network just published an all-new report on the subject.

Leon Draisaitl could really have been traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2016.

In the category of "major trades that almost happened", we find this.

In 2016, the Oilers and the Canadiens were seriously working on a trade involving P.K. Subban.

Montreal receive: Leon Draisaitl + Darnell Nurse or Oscar Klefbom + 4th overall pick (which became Jesse Puljujarvi)

Note that Matthew Tkachuk and Clayton Keller were still available

Edmonton received: P.K. Subban + 9th overall pick (which became Mikhail Sergachev)

Of course, the transaction never came to fruition, but imagine the scenario. Wow.

In the end, as you know, Subban was traded to the Nashville Preds for Shea Weber.

At the time of these negotiations in 2016, Draisaitl had accumulated 2 points in 6 AHL games, 9 points in 37 games in his first NHL season, and 51 points in his second NHL season.

As for Subban, he had just accumulated 51 points in 68 games and he had a Norris Trophy to his name. He was 26 years old.
