Trade finalized between the Canadiens and the Flames last year: a 2nd overall pick is now possible for Kent Hughes
In August 2022, Kent Hughes acquired Sean Monahan, along with a first-round pick in 2025, in exchange for future considerations. After an injury that spoiled the GM's plans to trade him at the last trade deadline, the 29-year-old forward agreed to return to the city for a season at the modest sum of $1.985 million. Seeing how he performs this season, it's a real bargain.
This bargain, in addition to possibly paying off big at the trade deadline, comes with a first-round pick. This pick, which is conditional, can lead to many scenarios. Here, as excellently diagrammed by the great Andrew Zadarnowski, are the different possibilities.
In a recent article, Marco D'Amico, from the websiteMTLHockeyNowmentioned that the Canadiens could, by some miracle, obtain the 2nd overall pick of the 2025 draft or the 1st overall pick of the 2026 draft.
"With scenario no. 3, the Montreal Canadiens would receive Calgary's first-round pick in 2025, which could go as high as the second overall in 2025 or, in the event that the Flames win the 2025 NHL lottery and choose first overall, an unprotected first-round pick in 2026 from either Florida or Calgary." - Marco D'Amico
WOW! Knowing how badly things are going in Calgary, nothing is impossible!
All this for taking on Monahan's salary so that the Flames could sign Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau. As of November 3, these two players had accumulated 4 and 5 points, respectively, the same total as Monahan.
