A clear solution seems to be emerging.
At any rate, the math is quite simple.
1- We have a team that has just placed on the trade market a player who is on a similar trajectory to Kirby Dach/Alex Newhook in Marco Rossi.
2- We have the Canadiens wanting to acquire another Alex Newhook or another Kirby Dach, and so, would likely be interested in Marco Rossi.
3- We have Rossi's team, the Minnesota Wild, who love to acquire late first-round picks.
4- We have Kent Hughes, who would evidently like to trade his late first-round pick.
While Minnesota is still extremely tight financially due to their large buyouts, Kent Hughes and Bill Guerin seem to be perfect trading partners.
And there you have it! An up-and-coming young player in exchange for a first-round pick that is ideal for salary cap management.
That doesn't mean it will happen, and it wouldn't be a one-for-one trade, but based on the solid information circulating, it seems to be an absolutely logical "fit" between Montreal and Minnesota.
Rossi, 22 years old, was a 9th overall pick (1st round) in 2020. After scoring 120 points, including 39 goals in 56 games in the OHL at only 17 years old, he immediately began his professional career.
Last season, he amassed 40 points, including 21 goals in 82 games with the Minnesota Wild. (51 points in 53 games in the AHL) He seems ready to bloom and advance to the next level, just as Kirby Dach was.
