It's actually realistic to think that, especially if Martin St-Louis's men can avoid the injury list over the next year. For that to happen, the veterans will need to set an example, showing that the team can aim for the playoffs.
Among these veterans for the Canadiens is none other than David Savard, who will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
However, if the Canadiens are in a good position around the trade deadline, Kent Hughes will have to make a decision regarding his veteran defenseman, as he will still hold good value on the trade market.
That said, as reported by DansLesCoulisses, former Canadiens scout Grant McCagg would take the risk of keeping Savard.
At least, that's what he stated to Tony Marinaro during a recent episode of the podcast The Sick Podcast, and McCagg even went as far as suggesting that the Canadiens' organization extend the veteran defenseman.
This idea seems interesting because Savard's leadership is a very important asset within a young team.
However, if the Canadiens are out of the playoff race when the trade deadline rolls around, Kent Hughes could then get a good return for number 58.
We know that the Dallas Stars are very interested; we know they love David Savard (and rightly so), but I truly believe Hughes should keep him.
