While Auston Matthews and William Nylander can rest easy about their future in Toronto, having signed new deals in the past few months, the same cannot be said for John Tavares and Mitch Marner.
Both will become unrestricted free agents in the summer of 2025, and while it's expected that Tavares will leave the team at the end of his contract next year, it might be a different story for Marner. As reported by the website Habsolumentfan.com, a renowned American journalist has made a rather interesting trade suggestion.
Greg Wyshinski, who covers hockey for ESPN, suggests that the Maple Leafs trade Mitch Marner to the new Utah team in return for Clayton Keller.
Really? Marner for Keller one for one?
In fact, the journalist sees this as an opportunity for Utah to start with a new acquisition of a star player to bring some publicity to the team because after all, Marner has had two 99-point seasons in recent years and he is only 26 years old.
As for Keller, even though he is a bit less productive than Marner offensively, he could be an important asset for the Leafs, especially in the playoffs as Keller is considered a spirited player, which is not necessarily the case with Marner.
Moreover, the Toronto organization would save about 3 million dollars on the payroll, but unlike Marner, who will become a free agent in the summer of 2025, Keller is still under contract until the 2027-2028 season.
